According to a security company, malicious code that targets a recently patched vulnerability in Microsoft Corp.'s Office suite has gone public. Users are instructed to update their patches immediately. The patch that addresses the flaws was issued by Microsoft on March 11th in its MS08-016 four bulletin security update. The malicious code has been posted to the Milw0rm.com Web site.

Some new research unveiled at the Black Hat conference last Thursday suggests that the Apple commercials that tease consumers into thinking that Macs are safer than machines running Microsoft's Windows could be a bunch of malarkey. The research, conducted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, examined the 0day patch rate for each of the companies. The results were interesting to say the least.

Regarding a previous Gtron News Article ("Hacking Contest," March 19 2008), the first winners of the contest were those that were able to hack the Apple MacBook Air. They did this on the second day of the contest, and were able to do it in two minutes. They exploited a Safari vulnerability.

Vulnerabilities in 90 percent of Web sites Print E-mail

According to White Hat Security, nine out of 10 Web sites are vulnerable to some sort of attack. On average, Web sites have seven vulnerabilities each, which of course leaves them susceptible to attacks. Successful exploitation can lead to system outages, incident handling costs, legal liability, brand damage, loss of business, or regulatory sanctions and fines.
