A flaw has been detected in Microsoft Word's handling of certain Word documents. A memory corruption vulnerability in Word could be exploited by a carefully written Word document. The ramifications of this would be that the attacker would be able to execute arbitrary code with the privleges of the current user. This vulnerability affects Microsoft Office 2000, XP, 2003, and Word Viewer 2003. As a safeguard on newer versions of Microsoft Office, Word documents are not open until prompted to do so by the user. Microsoft has confirmed and some of the technical details for this vulnerability are publicly available.
